This is the
Department of School Facilities and Operations, often called
Buildings & Grounds or Maintenance. Responsibilities of our
dedicated staff include the care and preservation of over 50
acres of property and over one quarter million square feet of
building space. Additionally, we strive to insure the comfort,
health and safety of the building’s occupants. A substantial
portion of the annual school budget is appropriated to this
department to provide the tools, goods and services needed to
meet these obligations.
Routine cleaning is
performed each school day by nine custodial staff removing trash
and recyclables, dry and wet mopping floors and cleaning windows
and walls. Food preparation areas, cafeterias, lavatories and
drinking fountains are also cleaned and sanitized daily. Summer
vacation for students means major work for our staff, cleaning
and polishing virtually every surface in occupied areas and all
school furniture and fixtures.
Preservation
and safety activities are performed by experienced
maintenance staff knowledgeable in the building trades and
familiar with current regulations and mandates. Their daily
duties include routine and emergency repairs on literally
hundreds of motors, pumps, controls and devices within the
building’s electrical, plumbing and heating systems. If
necessary, construction and renovation work is likely to be
performed by school staff during each recess and summer break.
Grounds and maintenance staff also perform mowing, athletic
set-ups and other outdoor activities during the school year and
snow removal in the winter months.
We work
diligently to comply with the many state and federal codes and
regulations for the safety of our students, staff and community.
We hope our efforts will always provide a safe and pleasant
experience to those who occupy the buildings each day or attend
our many after school functions. To contact the Facilities
Department during school hours, call 607-869-9636, ext.1421, or

South Seneca Central
School's Transportation Department strives to deliver
professional service by school bus to all the district students
that are qualified to receive transportation, not only to Ovid
and Interlaken, but to other locations such as TST Boces, Wayne
Fingerlakes Boces, off campus programs and schools based on
student's needs. We also transport all sport activities and
music activities as well as classroom "field trips" from both
school locations. Children from ages 4-21 ride district buses
over 400,000 miles each year. That is equal to the moon and back
twice each year, or 16 times around the earth's equator.
Each school bus driver receives a minimum
of 30 hours of classroom training when they begin driving a
school bus, followed by about 40 hours of on-road training, 4
hours minimum of classroom training each year and chances for
in-service training through out the school year. They also are
each fingerprinted, participate in random drug and alcohol
testing, and have yearly physical exams and yearly driving
evaluations to make sure each one passes rigid requirements set
by New York State. Each driver is professional and knowledgeable
about all aspects of school bus transportation.
Each school bus monitor also receives the
same training as the school bus drivers and have their own set
of qualifications that includes 10 hours of training
specifically for them, fingerprinting, yearly exams and in
service opportunities.
Each school bus receives twice yearly
inspection from NYS Department of Transportation during on site
inspections as well as being on a very strict preventive
maintenance program with our staff.
South Seneca Central School is always
looking for qualified, professional staff to join our
organization as bus drivers or bus monitors. Training is
provided. If you are interested in joining our staff, give
a call at 607-869-9636 ext. 1420. |
