Hunger Awareness Month Walk For Food
October is “Hunger Awareness Month” and what better way to raise awareness than to have a ‘Walk for Hunger’ at Sampson State Park on Oct. 16th ,also known as ’World Food Day’. Each participant garnered sponsors that pledged nearly $4,500 to be divided between the South Seneca Ecumenical Food Pantry in Ovid and Interlaken Reformed Church Food Pantry. Despite the blustery winds blowing off of Seneca Lake, nearly 80 area citizens aged 6-60 walked to raise money for the food pantries that have lost two large sources of income recently. Hike organizer, Priscilla Smalser commented, “the food pantries are struggling with the FEMA funding cut and the dented food supply from Food Link, and are in dire need of additional funds to meet the needs of the over 60 families that visit each food pantry each week.” Over 30 South Seneca and Romulus students participated along with their families representing many area organizations.
Thank you to the following organizations that supported the “Walk for Hunger” through their donations and by walking: Manning-Lilla American Legion, Girl Scout Troop 310 of Ovid, Christ Lutheran Church, South Seneca Middle School Honor Society, South Seneca School Board, Lakeshore Landing Association, Ovid Federated Church members, Interlaken Reformed Church members, Holy Cross Catholic Church members and St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church members.
