COMMUNITY SERVICE

Haiti Helpers

South Seneca students are Haiti helpers reaching out  and organizing penny drives, fundraisers and packing personal hygiene kits.

Watching a video of the destruction in Haiti moved South Seneca fifth grader, Leslie Marland  to do something for the people of Haiti.  After talking with several staff members, her idea was born to set up “Pennies for People” of Haiti.  “They really need help and I wasn’t sure what I could do to help them”, commented Leslie.  Leslie enlisted the help of Jeff Wells, cafeteria manager to set up collection cans in each classroom and safety patrol members to make posters with her original design.  The donations will continue until Feb. 4th when the pennies will be collected, counted and sent to the Red Cross.  Anyone wishing to donate pennies, please stop in the Elementary main office on Main Street in Interlaken.

South Seneca Middle School Government is sponsoring ‘Funds for Haiti’ days with a possible “pie in the face” event by a surprise staff member if $200 is raised.  Students will pay fifty cents to wear a crazy hat on Monday and wear their pajamas on Tuesday.  On Wednesday, a pie plate will be passed for donations during morning forum.  On Thursday and Friday, if 100% of students bring their planners and pens to forum, the National Junior Honor Society will donate $50 each day.  Thursday is favorite team day and Friday is a black and gold themed day.

South Seneca students from the Lodi Presbyterian Church packed personal hygiene kits containing soap, wash cloth, hand towel, toothbrush, comb, and fingernail clippers.  These are being sent via Church World Service to victims in Haiti.    Haiti helpers included Morgan McGonigal, Chandra  McGonigal,  Maddie Welch, Mackenzie Welch,  Billy Mix and Aaron Frederick (Trumansburg student).

Cocoa Cafe

On a cold winter’s day, nothing warms the heart more, than a delicious cup of hot chocolate! South Seneca Elementary cafeteria was the place for a Student Council “Cocoa Café” fund raiser to benefit the Romulus Dog Rescue Society.  Jenilee Watkins, advisor to the Student Council was pleased with a profit of $399 for the week-long event.  The 25¢ per cup fee included whipped cream, chocolate sauce, caramel sauce and sprinkles also and was available during lunch times in the cafeteria.  Staff,  parent volunteers and student council members manned the booth and assisted students for the 10 hours the booth was open during the week.  Thank you to community members, staff and students and their families who participated in this fundraiser.
