Author and Poet, David Greenberg Visits South Seneca Elementary

Poetry and rhyme kept South Seneca elementary students focused on visiting author and poet, David Greenberg last week.  The author visited South Seneca Elementary to enhance their reading incentive theme for the year; “Put a Poem in Your Pocket”, modeled after the annual Family Reading Partnership reading celebration. Greenberg tries to make each presentation his best ever, “these (presentations) are based on my poetry picture books. They are fun, funny, inspirational and filled with wisdom about what makes good writing and good writers.”     After the presentations, Mr. Greenberg lunched with 16 students as a reward to those that participated in the summer reading challenge:  Lillian McMillen, Kylie Cornish, Taylor Barkee, Lukas Day, Mathew Moore, Hailey Crane, Braeden Cupp, Nicholas Houck, Cristian McMillen, Catlin Cornish, Peter Trim, Julia Diamond, Cameron Cupp, Alexandria Miglioratti, Emma Worrell, Elijah Trim and Madelyn Houck. Groton Elementary and Trumansburg Elementary also hosted Mr. Greenberg for poetry presentations and he brought the house down at every presentation.  For more information on Mr. Greenberg’s books, go to http://www.authorsillustrators.com/greenberg/greenberg.htm

This beautifully illustrated book that highlights the timber industry was featured at the 2008 National Agriculture in the classroom Conference and won the National Arbor Day Foundation 2007 Book of the Year Award.  Thank you volunteers for instructing area second graders on the important timber industry.  For more information, please visit http://www.nyaged.org/aitc/educators/pdf/literacy/agday_fact.pdf

South Seneca Celebrates a Gala Empire State Ag Literacy Week!

You didn’t have to go all the way to Cortland or Jersey(mac) to celebrate this event! Empire State Agricultural Literacy Week included many activities at South Seneca Elementary during the week of March 16-20.  Mrs. Wilson’s class served Delicious Apple cake to the residents of the Bixby Home of Interlaken and read books by Fireside with an apple theme.   The residents loved the Aroma of the cake!  Students experienced the differences in color and taste between McIntosh, Ida Red and Ginger gold apples.

It was our great Fortune that the South Seneca cafeteria featured the apple in all lunches during the week.  Second grade classes had apple presentations from the Seneca County Cooperative Extension/4H Resource educators and volunteers based in Geneva.  Julie Thompson, a volunteer with the 4H and Farm Bureau; Rachel Williams, the 4H Bureau Resource Educator; and Dale Babbitt, a volunteer with the Farm Bureau,  read “The Empire State Investigates the Applesauce Bandit” by Julean Toloski and Heather Davis to the second grade.  The students listened to the story while eating applesauce.  A Gala activity and discussion of agriculture followed.

New York Agriculture in the Classroom sponsors NY Ag Literacy Week in support of its mission of fostering awareness, understanding and appreciation of agriculture and the food and fiber system.  The book that was read to classes was donated to the school library with a special bookplate recognizing the Seneca County Cooperative Extension/Farm Bureau/4H and NY Ag Literacy Week.
