PHYSICAL EDUCATION NEWS

Rise and Shine South Seneca

Due to the new physical activity requirements of 150 minutes/week per student in 2009-10 school year, the morning announcements now include several different upbeat songs with voiceover of exercises, chair exercises and aerobics.  Also, each class will fit a continuous six-minute walk into each school day! Physical activity has a big impact on student behavior and exercising each day is important to a healthy lifestyle.

SOUTH SENECA ELEMENTARY RAISES FUNDS THROUGH “JUMP ROPE FOR HEART”

South Seneca’s 11th annual “Jump Rope for Heart” event took place Feb. 1st-5th at the South Seneca Elementary School during Physical Education classes.  Students jumped for the first 10 minutes of each physical education class.  “Jump Rope For Heart” engages elementary students in jumping rope while raising funds to support lifesaving heart and stroke research.  In previous years, a 3-hour event was held for kids that could attend on a Saturday, and this year everyone could participate.   Students asked friends and family for donations and receive thank-you gifts based on the dollars they raised.  This educational program teaches physical fitness and promotes the value of community service to students and their families.  It shows students that they can contribute to their community's welfare raising $2,145.85 for the American Heart Association!   Top donation collectors were: Madelyn Houck--$269, Nicholas Houck--$254, Gregory Brewer--$125, Joseph Borst--$125 and Ian Dufour--$100. This event was organized by Physical Education teachers, Asa McMahon and Phil Marrella.  Retired P.E. teacher, Donna Coleman who organized this event for 10 years, assisted with the tallying.  For more information on this event, please go to www.americanheart.org
