New NYS Requirements for Dental Certificate

NYS requires a physical examination on file for all new students, and students entering grades K, 2, 4, 7 and 10.  The law has been amended and we are now required to ask for a dental certificate as well.  You can obtain a blank dental form from the Health Office and also on the website. Although the law does not currently mandate that students have to have this screening done, we do encourage good dental health for our students and recommend that an exam be done during the same year that the physical is required .The following are clinics in the area that will provide exams and give certificates at free or reduced prices.

South Seneca Elementary is fortunate to have dental care available at school, although the dental hygienists cannot sign the Dental Certificate.  The primary focus of the “Going Miles for Healthy Smiles” dental program provided by the Rushville Health Center is to provide quality, affordable, and accessible dental services to children.  The program offers a free dental screening/ referral, and homecare instructions to every student. A cleaning (prophylaxis) and fluoride treatments are also available.

NEWS FROM THE HEALTH OFFICE
869-9636 ext 4141

We have recently finished going to all classrooms to discuss hand washing, cough etiquette, and head lice prevention.  While we were in the classrooms, class head checks were performed.   I am very pleased to inform you that at this time, no head lice were found in the school.

I would like to remind you that it is very important to continue to be diligent and proactive in preventing future outbreaks.  Although nothing was found at this time, many if not all of our students do have contact with people outside the school setting.  I do not want you to have a false sense of security. It is usually impossible to tell, through a casual encounter, if someone has head lice.  Therefore it is possible for any of us to come in contact and contract head lice.  You should continue to use the preventive measures mentioned in the paperwork your child brought home after my visit.  Weekly checks by a parent can be helpful in detecting a problem before it gets out of hand.

If you have any questions or are ever unsure, you may feel free to contact us. At the number above or by e-mail @ kwilliams@southseneca.k12.ny.us

Thanks
