Student Interest in Space Launched with Student-Made Rockets

Third grade students built and launched rockets as they learned about space in the science lab. The process began with the study of the history of rockets and the building of models out of straws and paper. Students manipulated variables such as body length, fin shape, size, and number. After testing their straw models and determining the best design, students worked in groups to build larger rockets to launch outside. Before launching, students tested their rockets for balance and stability in the classroom using string. Rockets were launched from a homemade compressor built by teacher, Liz McCheyne. Instructions for this launcher (and lots of other fun science ideas, gifts, and equipment) can be found at the website, www.stevepanglerscience.com. Not only did students learn about space history, experimental design, and variables, they also learned about the importance of teamwork.
