Grade 5 Enrichment |
Fifth grade students have the opportunity to participate in Science Enrichment once a week on ‘D’ days at 1:15. We will explore a variety of topics including a pond study, the floating classroom on Cayuga Lake, solving an environmental mystery, building a working motor, and more! This enrichment class is voluntary and only available to students who are not scheduled for AIS at this time. This time slot does not overlap with any other clubs and will allow students to participate in art club, band, or library club also. Interested students should fill out an application as soon as possible, spaces fill rapidly. Students from around the United States and other countries collected samples from local ponds to determine if organisms found in pond water are the same all over the world.
Question: Will the same types of fresh water macroinvertebrates be found in different locations all over the country or world? Hypothesis: If ponds are in places that have different climates, then they will have different types of aquatic macroinvertebrates. Location: South Seneca Elementary School Interlaken, NY 14847 Class: 5th grade science/ Ms. McCheyne Procedure: We collected macro invertebrates from the surface, edge, open water, and bottom of the pond and identified them back at the classroom using keys, pictures, and online resources. We took pictures for our records and kept a tally. Macroinvertebrate tally:
Conclusion: We printed the data from other schools and compared each schools data to ours. We counted the variety of species found at each location. We found the following:
Are the same kind of aquatic macro-invertebrates found in ponds all over the world? Ponds all over the world have many of the same kinds of macro-invertebrates. Cleaner ponds have a greater variety of species no matter where they are located.
