South Seneca Elementary Science Room

Weather Grade 2

Content Skills Vocabulary
  • Many of the phenomena that we observe on Earth involve interactions among components of air, water, and land.

  • Weather is the condition of the outside air at a particular moment.

  • Weather can be described and measured by:
    · temperature
    · wind speed and direction
    · form and amount of precipitation
    · general sky conditions (cloudy, sunny, partly cloudy)

  • Water is recycled by natural processes on Earth
    · evaporation
    · condensation
    · precipitation
    · groundwater

  • Types of clouds---cumulus, stratus, nimbus, cirrus

  • Seasons---weather in each season, cycles, tilt of the earth causes seasons,

  • Extreme natural events (floods, hurricanes, and tornadoes and
other severe storms) may have positive or negative impacts on
    living things.

  • Science and technology
    weather tools---rain gage, anemometer, thermometer,
what causes wind---hot air rises and cold air pushes in underneath

Science in personal and social perspective
· early warnings for severe weather can save lives
the ability to predict weather can make life more pleasant---umbrellas, picnics, etc

Measure wind, rain, and temperature

Observing clouds

Predict weather

Experiment with temperature of water
communicate daily weather

Record, chart, graph temperature and rainfall

Compare weather patterns and clouds

Interpret weather conditions/ data

Classify clouds
